Vinalhaven: Benjamin Lewis Martin, Sr., 69, of Vinalhaven died at his residence on Thursday following a long illness. He was born at Swan's Island, Feb. 26, 1899, the son of William and Harriet (Matthews) Martin. He was educated in Swan's Island schools. Coming to Vinalhaven aver 50 years ago, he worked as a quarryman on the island. He later worked for Burnham and Morrill fish packing plant as a hoister. He was a member of the Woodcock - Cassie - Coombs post of the American Legion, Vinalhaven. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Edna Martin of Vinalhaven; four daughters, Mrs. Doris Young, Mrs. Hildred Hutchinson and Mrs. Frances Chandler, all of Vinalhaven, and Mrs. Marilyn Dunham of Deer Isle; seven sons, Benjamin Martin, Jr., Albert Martin, Donald Martin, Herbert Martin, Abbott Martin and Lewis Martin, all of Vinalhaven and Paul Martin of Biddeford; a brother, Abbott Martin of Boston, Mass.; six sisters, Mrs. Bessie Scott of South Thomaston, Mrs. Mary Oxton of Belfast, Mrs. Addie Burgess of Stonington and Mrs. Jean Burns, Mrs. Evelyn Johnson and Mrs. Rosie Staples, all of Swan's Island; 24 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in the Mac Fee Funeral Home, Vinalhaven, with the Rev. Norman Peacock officiating. Burial will be at Roberts Cemetery, Vinalhaven. He was buried in Robert's cemetery, Vinalhaven.
