STONINGTON - Carlyle J. Webb, 86, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at a Deer Isle healthcare facility. He was born Sept. 28, 1918, in Oceanville, the son of Harold A. and Vesta (Joyce) Webb. Carlyle was a graduate of Stonington High School, a successful businessman, as well as a community leader. Shortly after graduating from high school in 1936, he ran an oil business with his brother, Russell and owned and operated Central Garage in Stonington. In 1941 he built a new garage on West Main Street and operated it for 20 years, repairing and selling automobiles as well as operating a wrecker service. In 1961 he purchased the property next to his garage and opened an automobile parts store. As space became a necessity, this successful venture was moved next door when his garage was converted into Webb's Auto Supply. Other business ventures included owning auto body shops in Stonington and in Orland, managing a Studebaker dealership in the early 1950's, TV sales and service, and part owner of the Stonington Opera House in the 1960's. When not busy with his businesses, he managed the town baseball team, served as town selectman, school board member, chairman of the local Democratic Committee, and was a 50 year member of the Odd Fellows, serving as its Noble Grand. He was also instrumental in establishing an ambulance service on the Island and often drove his Chrysler station wagon in that capacity during its formative years. Carlyle's greatest service to his town was his 45 years as a member of the Stonington Volunteer Fire Department, with 42 of those years as Chief. At age 23 he became acting chief and served in that capacity from 1941 to 1945 and chief from 1945 to 1983 when he retired from that position. Under his guidance, the fire department grew to become a fully staffed department with a new facility and the equipment to fight all types of fires and the capability to deal with a variety of emergencies. He belonged to two local antique auto clubs and could be seen driving his pride and joy, a 1954 blue and white Chevrolet, in parades and to Owls Head Transportation Museum events. Carlyle was a wonderful husband and father and was a credit to his family, his friends, and his community. He will be greatly missed. Carlyle is survived by his wife of 64 years, Hattie E. (Haskell) Webb of Stonington; two sons, Glenn C. Webb and his wife, Linda, of Orland, Gary W. Webb and his wife, Elaine, of Deer Isle; three grandchildren, Sandra (Webb) Brouillette and her husband, Tom, of Orland, Valerie (Webb) Robinson and her husband, Ted, of Patterson, N.Y., Kimberly (Webb) Barnett of Portsmouth, R.I.; two brothers, Raymond Webb and his wife, Lurline, of Prospect and Alan Webb and his wife, Myrna, of Stonington; a sister-in-law, Marie Webb of Clinton; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Russell Webb of Clinton. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at the Community of Christ Church, Burnt Cove Road (Rt. 15A), Stonington. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Oceanville. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Carlyle may be sent to the Stonington Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 472, Stonington, ME 04681, attn.
