PITTSFIELD - Jasper H. Wyman, 82, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday, May 10, 2007. Jasper Henry Wyman was born April 25, 1925, in Dixmont. He was the son of Calvin and Gladys Smith Wyman. He grew up and attended local schools in Winterport. As a teenager, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and during World War II, he fought on the Japanese islands of Saipan and Tinian. As a 19-year-old member of the Fourth Marine Division, in February 1945, Jasper witnessed the historic flag raising on Iwo Jima. After the war, Jasper married his sweetheart, Phyllis Anderson Joyce of Deer Isle, in 1946. In addition to their own children, Jasper and Phyllis later opened their loving home to several foster children. Jasper was employed as a machinist for Hamilton Standard Aircraft, now part of United Technologies, Connecticut, for nearly 20 years. A devoted Christian, Jasper served his local church as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and as chairman of the board of trustees. In the summer of 1970, Jasper and Phyllis moved to Pittsfield. Jasper became involved in local politics, serving as a member of the Pittsfield town council, deputy mayor and for the past several years, as the very active chair-man of the Pittsfield Board of Appeals. Jasper was an avid outdoorsman, dedicated conservationist who fought to preserve farmland from development and enthusiastic Red Sox fan. He was also a member of the American Legion and the VFW. His organizational efforts on behalf of local candidates and referenda became well known and he was widely respected for his commitment to the public interest. Jasper is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Phyllis; three sons, Jack and his wife, Beth, of Highland Village, Tex-as, Allen and his wife, Mari-anne, of Silver Lake, Ohio, and Michael of Muskegon Heights, Mich. He is also survived by two daughters, Connie and her husband, Denny, of Torrington, Conn., and Truly and her husband, Bill, of Coppell, Texas; eight grandchildren, who loved and adored him and cherished every moment they could spend with him; a brother, Herbert Wyman of Chicago. Calling hours will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, at Donald H. Shorey Funeral Home, Hartland Avenue, Pittsfield. The funeral service, with full military honors will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, at Maine Veterans' Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, may be made to in Jasper's memory to Samaritian's Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607. Arrangements are entrusted to D.H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield.
