193. Danforth Pearl Staples was born on 17 June 1848 in Sedgwick, Hancock County, Maine, USA. He died Drowned about May 1898. A body was found in the water off vinalhaven having been badly decomposed. finding one foot misshapen, it was surmised that this might be the missing Mr. Staples. Found in an old newspaper clipping dated June 4, 1898 is the following gruesome article.
Danforth Staples Body Recovered
The body of an unknown man was found floating in Larry's Narrows near Leadbetter's Island Tuesday morning by James H. Ames of Vinalhaven. The body was badly decomposed and have evidently been in the water for a long time. Mr. Ames made known his discovery and the Vinalhaven authorities telephoned Coroner Judkins of htis city of instructions. The latter telephoned for the body to be taken to Vinalhaven, wither. Dr. Judkins and Frank B. Miller went Tuesday afternoon prepared to hold an inquest.
They found that the body had been towed into one of the docks, and immediately had it hoisted to the wharf where a preliminary examination was held. The flesh having fallen away from the head and face it was of course impossible to identify the remains from that source. It was finally discovered that one of the feet was misshapen and one of the spectators advanced the opinion that it might be the remains of Danforth Staples of Owl's Head, who was drowned in March while out fishing.
Mr. Staples' widow was telephoned and a description of her husband's clothing asked. This corresponded exactly to the apparel upon the body, two pairs of pants, a red sweater and a pair of leather boots. All doubt being thus dispelled arrangements were made for the burial of the body, Coroner Judkins considering an inquest unnecessary.
Mr. Staples was about 48 years of age. He had been married four times and is survived by a wife and five children.
