Thomaston: Mrs. Evelyn M. Smith, 74, formerly of Thomaston, died Tuesday at an Augusta nursing home following a long illness. She was the widow of Alvah Smith.
Born at Swan's Island on Nov. 8, 1897, she was the daughter of George and Ina Holbrook Stanley.
Mrs. Smith had been a resident of Thomaston having lived on Wadsworth Street until 1965 when she moved to the Gardiner area.
She was a member of the Rockland First Baptist Church and of the Opportunity Class of that church.
Survivors include one son, Milton Smith of South Portland; two daughters, Mrs. Carolyn Runnels of Randolph and Mrs. Lucille Huntsman of Readfield; one brother, Walter Stanley of Scarboro; several grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; an uncle, Alden Stanley of Southwest Harbor; and several nieces,nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from the Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner. Interment will be at Whitefield.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. She was buried in Whitefield cemetery, Thomaston. Evelyn M. Stanley and Alvah C. Smith were married on 15 May 1916 in Sullivan, Hancock County, Maine, USA. Alvah C. Smith was born on 18 September 1891 in Swan's Island, Hancock County, Maine, USA. He died on 15 February 1969.
