Lamoine: The body of a man who had gone out to tend a lobster trap was found washed up on the beach of the Lamoine State Park Friday afternoon. The body of Gordon F. Kenniston, 68, of Ellsworth, was found about 4:30 p.m. by a visitor to the park, who reported it to State Park Ranger John Petros. Kenniston had gone out earlier in the afternoon in a 12 to 14 foot aluminum rowboat without a motor to tend to his lobster traps. The boat apparently capsized about 150 yards off shore. Petros called the Hancock County Sheriff's Department at 4:31 p.m. Sgt. Nathan Anderson of the Sheriff's department is investigating the death. GORDON KENNISTON Amherst and Ellsworth: Gordon W. Kenniston, 68, died July 3, 1981, in Lamoine. He was born in Amherst, Oct. 9, 1912, the son of Harold and Katherine (Jewell) Kenniston. He was a mechanical supervisor for Lane Construction Co. for 38 years. Mr. Kenniston was a member of the Ellsworth Lions Club; minor Masonic Lodge No. 139 of Victor, N. Y.; the Scottish Rite Bodies and Cyprus Temple of Syracuse, N.Y. He is survived by his wife, Edna (Dunham) Kenniston of Ellsworth and Amherst; one sister, Anne K. Wadwell of Augusta. Masonic services were held Sunday at the Jordan Funeral Home, Ellsworth. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Amherst Cemetery, with the Rev. Reggie Couture officiating. Those who wish may make contributions in his memory to a charity of their choice or the Amherst Congregational Church. He was buried in Amherst cemetery. Edna Y. He died in June 1968 in Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine, USA. BENJAMIN MARTIN Vinalhaven: Benjamin Lewis Martin, Sr., 69, of Vinalhaven died at his residence on Thursday following a long illness. He was born at Swan's Island, Feb. 26, 1899, the son of William and Harriet (Matthews) Martin. He was educated in Swan's Island schools. Coming to Vinalhaven aver 50 years ago, he worked as a quarryman on the island. He later worked for Burnham and Morrill fish packing plant as a hoister. He was a member of the Woodcock - Cassie - Coombs post of the American Legion, Vinalhaven. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Edna Martin of Vinalhaven; four daughters, Mrs. Doris Young, Mrs. Hildred Hutchinson and Mrs. Frances Chandler, all of Vinalhaven, and Mrs. Marilyn Dunham of Deer Isle; seven sons, Benjamin Martin, Jr., Albert Martin, Donald Martin, Herbert Martin, Abbott Martin and Lewis Martin, all of Vinalhaven and Paul Martin of Biddeford; a brother, Abbott Martin of Boston, Mass.; six sisters, Mrs. Bessie Scott of South Thomaston, Mrs. Mary Oxton of Belfast, Mrs. Addie Burgess of Stonington and Mrs. Jean Burns, Mrs. Evelyn Johnson and Mrs. Rosie Staples, all of Swan's Island; 24 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in the Mac Fee Funeral Home, Vinalhaven, with the Rev. Norman Peacock officiating. Burial will be at Roberts Cemetery, Vinalhaven. He was buried in Robert's cemetery, Vinalhaven. |
