Benjamin Edward Joyce and Patricia Elaine Gilmour Joyce, both 82, began and ended their lives together tragically in a house fire on April 13, 2012, in Virginia Beach. Patricia and Ben were born on the same day, April 23, 1929. Patricia was born in Syracuse to the late Edward D. and Genevieve (Rubado) Gilmour. Ben was born in Seattle, Washington, to the late Benjamin W. and Vera (Stahl) Joyce.
Patricia was a graduate of St. John the Evangelist High School and a graduate of the St. Joseph's School of Nursing, Class of 1949. Ben was a graduate of Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy, Class of 1950.
The couple met in New York City and married in 1950. After a lifetime of traveling, Patricia retired as a registered nurse, and Ben retired as a captain in the United States Coast Guard, settling in Virginia Beach.
Survived by four children, Benjamin C. Joyce IV, Deborah (Rev. Ronald) McKeon, Steven G. Joyce and Elizabeth (George) Butler; Patricia's siblings, Michael (Paula) Gilmour of Cicero and Suzanne Gilmour Young of Harrisville, NY; Ben's sister, Patricia Joyce Quast; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be held on WEDNESDAY, May 2, 2012, at St. Joseph's Hospital Chapel at 10:30 a.m.
