An 18-year-old Swan's Island man was reported in stable condition in mount Desert Island Hospital Monday after sustaining head injuries in a single car crash on the island Saturday night which claimed the life of another Swan's Island man.
Timothy Ranquist, 18, was reported in stable condition Monday morning at the Bar Harbor Hospital with head injuries and cuts and bruises.
He was a passenger in a 1975-model subcompact which went out of control and crashed on State-Aid Road No. 1 on Swan's Island at about 11:20 p.m. Saturday. The driver of the vehicle, 23-year-old Dennis W. Joyce, was killed in the accident, according to state police.
Police said the vehicle went off onto the left shoulder of the road as it rounded a curve, rolled over on its side and then skidded back across to the righthand side of the road and came to rest in a wooded area.
Joyce was reported dead at the scene.
Investigating was State Police Trooper Terrence Parsons, with assistance from Hancock County Sheriff's Department Dale Finemore and Deputy Bob Tozier.
Swan's Island: Dennis W. Joyce, 23, died April 16, 1978, on Swan's Island. He was born Feb. 13, 1955 at Bar Harbor, son of Bradley and Gladys (Joyce) Joyce. Surviving are his parents of Atlantic; three brothers, James of Medford, Mass., David of Atlantic, and Philip of Bangor; three sisters, Mrs. Cheryl Kierstead of South Portland, Mrs. Connie Plumer of South China, Mrs. Virginia Remeck of Gorham; five nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 18, at 1 p.m. at the Atlantic Baptist Church, Swan's Island, with the Rev. Thomas Bullard officiating. If friends desire, they may contribute in his memory to the Atlantic Baptist Church. Funeral arrangements are by the Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert. He was buried on 18 April 1978 in Rose Hill cemetery, Atlantic. Unmarried.
