177. Ruth Elizabeth Smith was born on 27 August 1923 in Swan's Island, Hancock County, Maine, USA.

Ruth Elizabeth Smith and Merrill Stewart Orcutt were married on 30 November 1940 in Rockland, Knox County, Maine, USA. Merrill Stewart Orcutt, son of Laurence Edward. Orcutt and Marguerite Erma Sadler, was born on 13 May 1920 in Swan's Island, Hancock County, Maine, USA. He served in the military in World War II, US Army. He died on 17 September 1986 at the age of 66 in Swan's Island, Hancock County, Maine, USA. Merrill was buried on 20 September 1986 in Rose Hill cemetery, Atlantic. Merrill worked on the town roads for many years. He was a very kind man with a great sense of humor. Had had a major heart attack in his 40's and was restricted in what he could do. He loved flying but wasn't allowed to get his license due to his health. He was a singer on a radio station prior to their marriage, in Bristol, CT.

According to my Aunt Ruth, they planned to get married later but my grandmother persuaded them to move the date up because they were going to be traveling and she was worried about the weather. They chose Nov 30 and got caught in a blizzard before they got to Rockland. They were on their way to CT so Merrill could work at Pratt & Whitney.

On Sept 10, 2006 she told me there was no work and the roads were a mess. Merrill started in 1948 and cleaned up the roads in a year. He traded his car for a truck and hauled Maynard Herrick's gas until he became a partolman.
