Bickmore and Frances Murphy, was born on 4 November 1883 in Friendship, Knox County, Maine, USA.⁴⁵ On 12 September 1918 he was a fish curer for S. Morse & Son in Swan's Island, Hancock County, Maine, USA.⁴⁶ He died on 3 August 1971 at the age of 87 in Portland, Cumberland County, Maine, USA. Merton was buried in Flag cemetery, Waldoboro, Maine.

In the 1930 Swan's Island census he the head had his parents living with him.
On his draft card he was of medium build and height with gray eyes and brown hair. Fred Wilbur was registrar.
