Mildred E. Bridges and Merton A. Staples were married on 10 October 1908 in Swan's Island, Hancock County, Maine, USA. Merton A. Staples, son of John S. Staples and Lucy Jane Staples, was born on 10 April 1882 in Swan's Island, Hancock County, Maine, USA. He died on 1 October 1972 at the age of 90 in Damariscotta, Lincoln County, Maine, USA. Newcastle: Merton A. Staples, 90, father of Clayton Staples of Thomaston, died Sunday at a Damariscotta hospital.
A ship's carpenter for 30 years at the Harvey Gamage Shipyard, South Bristol, Mr. Staples had retired only four years ago, having worked at the Snow Shipyard in Newcastle until it closed and at both Pendleton's Yard, Wiscasset, and at the Jonah Morse Shipyard in Damariscotta.
Mr. Staples was born April 10, 1882 on Swan's Island, the son of John S. and Lucy J. Staples. He had resided in Newcastle since 1924.
He is survived by his widow, the former Mildred Bridges, and besides their son, by a granddaughter Mrs. Andrea Abbott of Cumberland, a great-grandson, a niece, a nephew and several cousins.
Funeral services will be held at the Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta, Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., the Rev. William Carter officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Damariscotta. He was buried in Hillside cemetery, Damariscotta. Moved to Newcastle in 1924.
