Smith 89, died Wednesday night at a Bangor hospital after a long illness. He was born at Swan's Island August 4, 1874, son of Andrew and Inez Joyce Smith. He attended the Tremont Larger Parish, Shaw Business College in Portland, and the Navel Training School at Rockland. He was a junior officer in Merchant Marines during World War 1. He was a former member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows Lodges at Swan's Island. He was an honary member of the Knights of Pythias of Bernard. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Alice (Robinson) Smith of here; a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Warren of Vinalhaven; a son, Clarence E. of Manset; nine grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 pm Sunday at the Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert, the Rev. Bradford C. Paynes officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor. Friends may call at the funeral chapel Saturday from 2 to 5 pm. He was buried in Mt. Height cemetery, Southwest Harbor.

Portland: Laura A. Sprague, 83, of 880 Forest Ave., formerly of Swan's Island, died April 30, 1986, at a local hospital. She was born on Swan's Island, the daughter of Ernest and Nanette (Trask) Sprague and attended Swan's Island schools. Miss Sprague owned and operated an island grocery store for many years until she retired in 1965 and moved to Portland. She was a member of the Atlantic Baptist Church of Swan's Island and attended Glenwood Baptist Church. She is survived by two nephews, Warren Sprague of Portland and Eugene Norwood of Swan's Island; one cousin, Maurice Sprague of Swan's Island. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Jones, Rich and Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, with the Rev. William A. Irish officiating. Commital services will be under the direction of the Fernald Funeral Home, mount Desert at 1 p.m. Monday at Rose Hill Cemetery, Swan's Island.
