SWANS ISLAND - Norman B. Staples, 81, died unexpectedly March 7, 2003, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Dec. 2, 1921, in Swans Island, the son of Howard and Hazel (Stockbridge) Staples. Norman was a loving, caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a lobsterman for 57 years and a member of the Swans Island Fisherman's Co-op. He served the Town of Swans Island as moderator and member of the planning board for 25 years. Norman was Past President and a member of the Swans Island Electrical Co-op, a member of the I.O.O.F. of Swans Island and also Past Deacon and faithful member of the Atlantic Baptist Church. Norman is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Marguerite "Joyce" Staples; three sons, Terry Staples and his wife, Frances, of Swans Island, Peter Staples and his wife, Theolyn, of Bangor, and Timothy Staples and his wife, Susan, of Portland; eight grandchildren, Terrie-Jo Hardwick, Christopher Staples, Keith Staples, Shelly Morin, Allison Kahkonen, William Staples, Zachary Staples and Rhonda Ranquist; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Judith. Friends are invited to call 11-12 p.m. Tuesday, at the Atlantic Baptist Church, where funeral services will be held at noon with Pastor Kenneth Dutille officiating. Interment will be held at Rose Hill cemetery, Atlantic. If friends desire they may make contributions in Norman's memory to the Atlantic Baptist Church Steeple Fund or the Swans Island Library, Swans Island, ME 04685.
