Descendants of Swan's Island's John Rich
According to Dr. Small in his 'History of Swan's Island', John J. Rich,
son of John & Emma (Cross) Rich, came to Swan's Island, probably
from Mount Desert Island in 1794 and settled on the eastern side of the
island. When Mr. Rich left his property it came into the possession of
Moses Staples. It is clear that the John Rich who died in 1855 at Isle
au Haut is not the same person. About the time of settling of Swan's
Island there were several people in the area named John Rich. This
genealogy report is of the John Rich who returned to Mount Desert
Island and died in 1819. John & Suky Rich had a deed notarized by
Joseph Pierce, Justice of the Peace, on Swan's Island in 1800, helping
to confirm family identity and location.
