1. Capt. John J. Rich was born on 11 August 1767 in Marblehead, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA. He was christened on 23 August 1767 at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Marblehead, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA. He died Consumption on 6 February 1819 in York, York County, Maine, USA. Died at his brother-in-law's house, Capt. Luther & Lucy (Tucker) Grow). Although John could have started working Swan's Island property in 1794 or soon thereafter, it would have taken time to make improvements and build a home sufficient to shelter & sustain his family. John did not sell his property on Mt. Desert until 1797, and James Swan did not provide for future land grants through Joseph Pierce until 1798. It is more likely John Rich and the others settled there closer to 1797/98. The 1800 census shows John Rich with a wife and two daughters still living on Swan's Island.
It is unknown exactly when John Rich, Jr. moved from Swan's Island, but he was again living in Mt. Desert by the 1810 census. As John's land was then claimed by Moses Staples, and no actual deed to John Rich has been located, it is likely John did not stay on Swan's Island the full seven years required.

Capt. John J. Rich and Susanna "Suky" Tucker were married on 14 August 1791 in Mount Desert Island, Maine, USA. Susanna "Suky" Tucker was born on 13 June 1774 in Mount Desert, Hancock County, Maine, USA. She died after September 1817.
