Her employment included New England Telephone Co., Portland and Rockland, Anaconda Wire & Copper and J.C. Carter Co., California; the former Dow Motors, Ellsworth, and Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. She was also a successful Avon representative for seven years. Additionally, she began her career in 1968 as a legal secretary, employed by Bar Harbor attorney Ralph C. Masterman, deceased. In 1975, she was hired by Tremont attorney Wayne P. Libhart as his personal secretary, and administrative secretary of the Ellsworth branch office of the former firm of Libhart, Ferris, Dearborn and Willey. At the time of her retirement, Karen was employed as personal secretary to Ellsworth attorney Peter R. Roy, a position she held for many years. Karen was a charter member of and held various offices in the Hancock County Legal Secretaries Association, and was a member of the National Association of Legal Secretaries. She was active in civic and town affairs, resigning from the Planning Board in December of 2000 because of her illness, after many years as member and secretary of the board. Karen was also self-employed as a freelance secretary and medical transcriptionist from her home office. She enjoyed her young grandchildren and pursued her hobby of photography. She was an accomplished seamstress and home decorator, and piano and organ were her musical outlets. She was a member of Family Bible Church, Ellsworth, and during her years there, had served as organist, soloist, choir member and handbell ringer. She will be greatly missed by Pastor Richard Rockwell, his wife, Jerral, and her friends and church family. Karen’s first marriage to George Crawford of Lamoine ended in divorce in 1981, although they remained close friends. In 1995, she married Sidney L. Eaton of Stonington. Their mutual love of the outdoors, boating, boat racing, exploring the islands, and time spent with their six children and 16 grandchildren filled their years together. Back surgery in 1993 forced her to give up riding her motorcycle and cross-country skiing, but in spite of her health problems, she remained physically active in water aerobics, weight training, walking, biking, and kayaking. Karen’s enthusiasm for life, her bright and positive spirit, and determination were inspiring to and admired by all who knew her. A caring, compassionate, loving and generous lady, she had a great concern for the illnesses and pain suffered by others. She was always ready to assist others, to provide assurance, nurturing and inspiration, as evidenced by her own optimistic and positive attitude as she endured a valiant eight-year ordeal against chronic lymphocytic leukemia. She faithfully trusted God and thanked Him daily for her many blessings. During the fall and winter of 1997, Karen decided to pursue a new vocation and in May of 1998 graduated from Pierre’s School in Bangor as a manicurist. She operated her small business in Stonington during that summer until September, when ill health again forced her to retire. In spring of 1999, she took up the sport of kayaking and immediately found her niche. She spent many sunny days in Stonington Harbor and surrounding coves in her purple kayak, at Morgan’s Bay in Surry, and coves and harbors around Swan’s Island. Karen believed that while kayaking she was very close to God, observing the beauty of her surroundings, absorbing the peacefulness of her beloved ocean, and finding profound peace and contentment in her soul. Karen was predeceased by her well-known boatbuilder father, Robert "Bobby" Rich in 1981; her grandparents, Alvin A. and Bessie Reed Walls, and Clifton M. and Elizabeth F. Rich. Karen felt blessed and honored that she had a multitude of close friends and members of several churches from Maine to California who prayed for her recovery, especially during her treatment at Dana Farber Cancer Institution in Boston. She will be remembered by her many friends on Swan’s Island, where she and her family camped for many summers when her children were young. For the past 18 years, she and her close friend, Linda Aaskov, spent one wonderful week there each summer at Toothacher Cove. The members of Karen’s high school senior class will miss her cheerfulness, her enthusiasm in organizing reunions, and her devotion to that small circle of friends coming together each year to share memories, laughter and tears. Her faithful and loving cat, Trixi, companion for many years, will also miss her love and affection. A memorial service was held Oct. 3, 2001, at Family Bible Church, Route 3, Ellsworth. It was Karen’s desire that a portion of her ashes be cast into the ocean at Bass Harbor, at Toothacher Cove on Swan’s Island, and at Stonington, all seaside communities she loved and were so much a part of her life. Gifts in Karen’s memory may be made to the Mary Dow Cancer Center, Ellsworth, the Shannon McCormack Foundation, 76 Sewall St., Brookline, MA 02446, or the Lamoine School for its art and reading programs.
