1356. Clayton H. Gross was born on 18 March 1935 in Stonington, Hancock County, Maine, USA. He was educated in 1957 in Gorham State Teacher's College. He died on 21 March 2005 at the age of 70 in Stonington, Hancock County, Maine, USA. CLAYTON H. GROSS STONINGTON-Clayton H. Gross, 70, died suddenly on Monday, March 21, 2005, at his home in Stonington, Maine. He was born March 18, 1935, in Stonington, the son of Kenneth C. and Doris E. (Gray) Gross. Clayton was educated in Stonington schools and graduated from Gorham State Teacher's College, class of 1957. He taught school in Litchfield, Dexter, Woodland and Gardiner. Clayton began working at the Island Ad-Vantages in 1969 as a photographer and writer of the column “Day Before Yesterday,” and continued working at the paper until his death, writing his column and reporting the weather for several years. He greatly enjoyed history, especially American history, but his first love was local history. Clayton was a past president of the Deer Isle-Stonington Historical Society, and was the author of two books, Steel Over Eggemoggin and Island Chronicles. He was also a member and past master of Marine Lodge #122, A.F. & A.M. in Deer Isle. Clayton enjoyed gardening, animals and bird watching. He was an avid reader of books, magazines and newspapers. Clayton is survived by his wife of 30 years, Nancy C. (Brown) Gross of Stonington, and many cousins and friends. A memorial service will be held in the summer at the United Methodist Church in Stonington. Cremation arrangements are by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Stonington.
Clayton was cremated. He was buried spring 2005 in Evergreen cemetery, Oceanville, Maine. He was educated in Stonington High School. Clayton was a Writer of History and for local newspaper.
