John Alden, a cooper by trade, was engaged by the Pilgrims to maintain the barrels of beer, which was their drink in the absence of potable water, during their perilous Atlantic crossing to the new world.

There was probably some truth at least in the account of his winning the hand of Priscilla Molines as given in Henry Wadworth Longfellow's famous poem, "The Courtship of Miles Standish". Longfellow himself was a descendent of John and Priscilla.

They had 11 children. They moved to Duxbury, Mass., in 1632. John was Treasurer of the Old Colony of Plymouth, 1656-1658.
