Swan's Islanders have made their living from the sea since the early 1800's, when they fished for cod and haddock using hook and line. In the early 1900's, it was the lobsters they were trying to catch. Many fisheries have gone bust, but lobstering has remained strong for a long time. |

Efforts to sustain the lobster industry, which include trap limits, minimum size restrictions, v-notching of egg bearing females, and more are in place. |

Many lobstermen fish year-round, while others bring their gear ashore and haul out their boats for the winter. |
