Swan's Island is governed by a committee of Selectmen.

Meetings are held each Thursday at 7:00PM at the town office. 

All are invited and welcome to attend.
Though, time and place may be changed due to specific circumstances such as weather.

The Town Clerk's duties include licensing dogs, registering boats, issuing hunting and fishing licenses, issuing marriage applications and licenses, providing copies of vital records, genealogy information, taking minutes of public meetings and has in her care all the town records such as birth, death and marriage licences, appeals board decisions,subvisions, ordinances and general information about the town.

Gwen also provides, even though it is not part of her duties, notary public and dedimus justice services.

The Registrar of Voters tends to the voting list keeping it current and correct. She is the one who enters new voters into the Central Voter Registration and changes party affiliations if a voter so decides. The Registrar signs petitions in a timely manner and oversees voting list is printed for elections.

The Town Treasurer is in the town office each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The duties of the treasurer include issuing weekly warrants and paying bills as approved by the selectmen, and receiving money from the town clerk/tax collector, as well as from various municipal departments, to be deposited and categorized. 
The treasurer is responsible for balancing all bank accounts, and releasing tax liens as taxpayers meet their obligations.
She is also responsible for reporting to department heads and the selectmen, the budgetary status of all accounts.

The Tax Collector sends out tax bills, collects taxes, places liens on taxes not paid any time from 8 months to 1 year after the commitment date. She also collects excise due on motor vehicles and registers vehicles This is the office to contact for current addresses as well as to find out any tax information.

Taxes are not considered paid in full until the interest due is paid as well, by law.

You can pay property tax and excise tax by credit card. The Town of Swan's Island has joined with "Official Payments Corp." to offer a quick and convenient way to pay your taxes online. There is approximately a 3% handling fee charged by Official Payments but it tells you what the fee is as soon as you enter the amount due.

The Harbor Masters serve to keep law and order under control in both Swan's Island Harbor and in Mackerel Cove. They often assign a mooring (or suggest an area to drop anchor) as the summer traffic comes into Burnt Coat Harbor. Often times, their duties include policing the municipal floats to be sure that the rules are not broken for safety sake.

The Administrative Assistant's duties are to field calls and emails and do correspondence for the Selectmen as well as to post the agenda for their weekly meetings and take minutes.
