NEW STORE OPENS - JUNE 2007

A most welcome sight on Swan's Island - a new store! Sheena Kennedy and Eric Greenlaw were behind the counter greeting customers on opening day, June 11. The store is very charming and has a little bit of everything, canned goods, fresh produce, frozen foods, dairy products, and ICE CREAM!

The opening of the store has lifted the spirits of islanders who have been without a store for quite some time.

The small store is temporary, with a larger store planned for sometime in the future. The store owners wanted to be open for the summer season, so they built the small store building for now.

CEMETERY RESTORATION WORK - SEPTEMBER 2006

Fred Wieninger and his son-in-law, Matt, of Fred Wieninger Monuments in Milbridge, have been working on restoring some of the old cemetery stones in the Grindle Hill Cemetery this fall. There have been approximately 50 stones that have been restored and righted to date. In 2007, they are planning to come back and do work in the old section of the Rose Hill Cemetery. The funds came from the Cemetery Restoration Fund which was money originally given in memory of Milton 'Bud' Staples, but donations will be accepted in memory of other loved ones.

There has been a great group of volunteers that have been laying the foundation work for Fred so he can spend his time repairing the stones and setting them back in their original places. There was also an effort to match the foot stones up with the rightful owners after they had been removed from the graves. Volunteers also cleaned the old stones.

We hope to, someday,be able to give the unmarked graves a marker of some sort. If anyone knows the names of the people in the unmarked graves, please email gwenjmay@tds.net

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS - JUNE 2006
A large hole was dug in January for the foundation of the new town office addition. Then, the idea of incorporating a medical clinic with the town office addition arose and it was decided to present the issue at town meeting in March to decide what voters wanted to do.

Voters recently approved locating the medical clinic at the Olde Salt Restaurant/Nursery School building at Mill Pond Park instead of at the existing town office. Once that was decided progress on the town office addition could move forward.

The concrete footers were poured the last week of June, which is the first step in constructing the new town office addition.

There was a special town meeting held on May 5 at 7 PM at the school gym to determine the location of the medical clinic which was approved at town meeting in March.
